As libraries take the increasingly strong educational leadership role through their educational and/or training programs, there emerges a need of professional benchmarking and accountability for the effective and efficient provision of such programs through evaluation. While the use of surveys and statistics of attendance are still the useful means for evaluation of these programs, there is an increasing demand both professionally and organisationally to evaluate the programs further, in order to make a stronger case for the pedagogical effectiveness and educational impacts of these programs in terms of the students/participants learning with an evidence-based approach.
The proposed workshop will portray evaluation as a means that facilitates reflective practice and effective communications for those who coordinate and/or teach educational and/or training programs, enabling the practitioners to engage with their colleagues, clients and stakeholders by producing a strong and compelling evaluation narrative well supported by a range of evidence.
In this workshop, the participants are introduced to a comprehensive and systematic approach to the evaluation of educational and/or training programs. The workshop will first outline the general philosophical, theoretical and political debates around the topic, and discuss how these debates influence what is considered successful educational practice that is subject to evaluation. The workshop will then cover the different aspects of the programs that can be evaluated, and will present relevant methodologies and methods for planning, devising and implementing appropriate evaluation instruments. The workshop will conclude by addressing the ways the results of evaluation can be collated and disseminated, as well as by addressing potential issues around confidentiality and privacy as well as institutional requirements.
Throughout the workshop, the participants will work on their own educational and/or training program(s) as case study, and on completion of this workshop, the participants will have 1) basic understanding of the philosophical, theoretical and political debates around the topic of evaluation and beyond, 2) ability to identify aspects of their own program to be comprehensively and systemically evaluated, 3) basic abilities to effectively and efficiently plan appropriate evaluation instruments, and 4) abilities to plan collation and dissemination of the results of evaluation for various purposes and audiences while considering associated legal and policy requirements.
While this workshop was originally developed for those working in academic libraries, this workshop is also relevant to anyone who manages, coordinates, develops and/or delivers an educational and/or training program(s) in or outside a library.
